Stretching: Aerobic exercise will help your heart beat oxygen to all your organs. Weight training will give you strength and muscle definition that can make you look years younger. But a healthy fitness regime also needs to include stretching muscles, as well as working on your poise and balance. The ability to move gracefully with little pain are equally important in terms of aging gracefully. Speed and power aren’t the whole story. Combine Yoga and Pilates into your workouts. You’ll be surprised at how strenuous these types of exercises can be. They may look easy to do, but they build a type of sinewy muscle that’s necessary for graceful movement. healthy eating: While it’s important to exercise to keep your body in tip-top shape, it’s equally important to make sure that your body has enough fuel to keep functioning at top capacity. You’ve likely heard about how you’re supposed to eat a certain amount of foods from every food group, so we won’t go over the same boring information in this section of the book. Instead we’ll go over the best way for you to eat to help you burn fat and build muscle. First of all, simplify your eating by making sure that each of your meals contain the following: A lean protein like chicken, fish or egg whites, A starchy carbohydrate like potato, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta, A fibrous carbohydrate like broccoli, spinach, green beans or salad. Use your common sense and cut back on refined sugars and salts, and make sure you eat or drink enough calcium-rich foods and beverages to maintain or strengthen your bone density. Take nutritional supplements as necessary to compliment your healthy diet, but not to make up for inadequacies in your diet. Spend a little extra money and get good quality powder supplements that are easy for your body to dissolve. Budget horse pill-size vitamins won’t do you much good because your body has a hard time digesting and dissolving the pills.

More funds sought for in-home senior care - Arkansas News(SeniorCareStories)

LITTLE ROCK - Members of the state Legislature's Senior Caucus said Thursday they have asked Gov. Terry Smith, D-Hot Springs, said a group met with Beebe Thursday on the issue. Tim Herr, executive director of the Area Agency on Aging of West Central Arkansas in Hot Springs, told the public health committees that high gas prices, growth in Arkansas' elderly population and low wages for aides are jeopardizing the state's ability to provide in-home care for seniors. Herr said Area Agencies on Aging and the state Health Department employ about 4,827 home care aides and provide in-home care to more than 14,500 senior Arkansans, more than 90 percent of whom he said are low-income Medicaid recipients. Aides who care for the elderly in their homes or deliver meals to the elderly have to buy their own gasoline, Herr said. Herr said much has been said about the advantages of home or community-based care over nursing home care for those able to live at home, but if aides are not available to provide services, "it's a moot issue. read more

Florida mobile home senior communities

What, or who, is a senior citizen? an easy question? Anyone who ever asked this question might be looked at as though they’ve suddenly sprouted purple elephant ears from the side of their heads. After all, everyone knows who or what a senior citizen is, right? Maybe not. For example, if you ask a 15-year-old what a senior citizen is, he may glibly answer that it’s anyone over the age of 40. After all, age is subjective and over 40 can be unbelievably old to someone this young. An if age is subjective, someone who is in their late 50s may not feel “old,” but may still qualify for many senior benefits. Which brings us back to the original question: What, or who, is a senior citizen. Many dictionaries will give a variation of this sterile definition: A senior citizen is “a person of relatively advanced age, Especially a person at or over the age of retirement.” A popular legal encyclopaedia elaborates on this definition. A senior citizen is a term that refers to “people whose stage in life is generally called old age, though there is no precise way to identify the final stage of a normal life span. People are said to be senior citizens when they reach the age of sixty or sixty-five because those are the ages at which most people retire from the workforce.”

(SeniorCareStories) Senior living options grow - Muscatine Journal

Barb Krall, executive director of Senior Resources in Muscatine County, said the concept of supportive living began emerging after she began working in the area of senior care 24 years ago. Another alternative to moving to a full-service long-term care facility are senior living communities where the monthly rental fee for an apartment also covers a variety of services and resources. According to the American Association of Retired Persons, long-term care describes services beyond medical care and nursing care used by people who have disabilities or chronic illness. Long-term care insurance helps pay for these services and helps ensure policy-holders can make their own choices about what long-term care services they receive. read more
